Jon Castillo

My work at the moment is very much about people, culture and society. I like to explore everything about people from the individual to social interactions in both private domestic settings and public venues. I am very interested in technology and how the use of lighting, digital manipulation and other forms of technical artifice can inform an image. Often my work is constructed scenes that are carefully staged, directed and lit. Other times I like to embrace the unpredictable elements of photography by setting up rigorous constraints with certain elements left to chance encounter, usually in public settings.

All of this work is in progress and still developing

Car Culture Series: (This was my BFA submission artist statement so people can see it, it's going to change again)

Artist Statement

I spend countless hours a week driving alone in my car, often feeling that this time of solitude is insignificant and merely a necessity of life. Due to this, the manner in which I occupy this space has captured my interest. I have become engaged with this space that exists within an occupied vehicle; the space that is both public and private. My photographs are documents of the people who inhabit these spaces and the surrounding Los Angeles landscape. The use of lighting allows normally banal moments to become theatrical relationships between car, passenger and the public space of the road.

Photoclub assignment/peer critique

When I took intermediate photography with Desiree Devirgilio this assignment really helped me just expand... I'm hoping that people in the photo club shoot for this "assignment" and come to the peer critique on Nov. 15th Tuesday at 10am in FA-4 room 108a. This would be a good opportunity to learn advanced critiquing methods. Hope everyone participates!

(Taken from Desiree Devirgilio's class)

What are your limits? Social Limits? Physical limits?

Think about a limit you have established for yourself, challenge it through a performative act, and use photography as a way to communicate this new experience to your audience.

Think about the different ways photography can be used to demonstrate, document, or generate a new experience outside your comfort zone. Identify your own understanding of the difference between these functions while pushing the limits and create a relationship between your photographs and the performative act. Try not to be symbolic about your resistance. While illustration can be a powerful tool in photography, in this assignment, instead think about how the meaning arises out the methods by which you have chosen to push your limits.

Concepts to research and or think about; documentation, performative act, the boundary between art and life (is there one?), demonstration...

Please bring at least 3 prints. Shoot as much as it takes...if you want bring at least 3 printed images and contact sheets of anything you have shot.

Due: Nov. 15th on Tuesday 10am (FA-4 room 108a)

Have a good weekend!

I love fine art, working with the body, and trying out new ideas. The first image was taken in a studio for a metaphoric project. The second image was taken just to try out working with a snoot light in a bedroom. The third image I wanted to work with a surreal idea, and it was for a panoramic project. Lastly, my four was taken in Penang, Malaysia and is of an old abandoned house and it was the first time I shot with color film.

Natalie Bouroumand

These two photos are part of a project I'm working on for a class. It's about this girl and her personality. I have one other photo I'm working on where the mirror is broken and she's looking at it, with an angry face.
The last photo was actually taken with my phone and edited with an app from my phone.

I wanted to explore the United States Marine Corps from a new perspective by looking at it through their support systems. Support systems are business establishments that provide services that Marines need to maintain their status/or what signifies them as a Marine—like the haircut or ‘perfectly’ tailored clothing.
By examining the barbershop and tattoo shop, I want to reveal aspects of Marine life that are normally not shown. The environments reinforce the utilitarian image of this organization, while hinting at the human side of the military.

The first 4 pictures are from a photogallery that I hosted as a senior for a project in highschool ( that took place in March) and those where the ones that people complimented the most. The last picture is of my "most recent work", I did a photoshoot with a friend jsut for fun and that was one of my favorite :) -Guadalupe Villegas

Cari Hoversten

Personal Statement: Cari Hoversten
I enjoy capturing moments with color rarely seen or appreciated by the naked eye, always with the intention of making my audience take a second look not only at my work but the world around them. The angle is also important to me, whether it's at bird's eye or worm's eye or a view just in between, I choose the angles I do to create a personal relationship between the viewer and subject. We are all in this world together and I love to convey this message of unity through my lens.
