Happening: The Affordable Art Fair

The Affordable Art Fair starts tonight in NYC and I wish wish wish I could be there. I started collecting very small works about four years ago and this art fair provides the opportunity for collectors with a minimal budget to purchase works from many up and coming artists. Work is priced between $100 and $10,000 and the fair is open to the public until Sunday. Ticket prices are only $15 for students but it is free on friday from 6-8p.m. If for some reason, you're mulling around NYC this weekend, I suggest a stop by. You might just discover the next big thing, or at the very least, you'll probably find something more interesting than that Bob Marley poster to hang on your wall. If, like me, you are sadly unable to attend the Fall 2010 AAF, never fear, for there will be another one this spring from May 5th-8th in the same location. For this Fall event,  20x200 (the Jen Beckman project) will be attending with some beautiful prints by photographer Jeremy Kohm, that I'd like to see in person. I's also like to see the Dentiza paintings presented by Art Bazaar, paintings by Lionel Pratt presented by the Muriel Guepin Gallery, The David Meanix photosculptures presented by Krause Gallery, and especially Vanessa Smith's works presented by Mark Jason Gallery.

Salton Sea trip dates

I was SOOO excited for the Salton Sea trip that I wrote the dates wrong in the last flyer. The REAL dates are Friday September 24th- Saturday September 25th. Don't miss. Also, the 1st CEPICO meeting will be next Wednesday September 22nd in FA4 108 from 12-1 p.m. We'll discuss the gallery show for the Yosemite trip, upcoming and possible lectures, seminars and trips as well as the Great Salton Sea Trip.

Monthly Mini-Trip to Salton Sea

The twice a year camping trips are great fun, but why should we have to wait until January for the next one? CEPICO members can now enjoy monthly mini-trips. This month, September, we'll be traveling a short distance to The Salton Sea. We will meet at 10 a.m. on Friday September 22nd in the CSULB parking lot behind the art office building. You have the option of staying the night and camping with us or just coming up for a day of shooting. If you have any questions, email Windy at photoclub007@gmail.com. Come make art!

Photographer Clay Enos

Personally thought this was a great video showing how you don't need a lot to make interesting photos. Just some open shade, a white background, and your camera. Doing a shoot like this would definitely help if you're interested in portrait photography. Being able to interact with someone you don't know for less then 30 seconds and gaining their trust to let you photograph them is super important. Finding a good scene/location is the easy part what's normally hard is getting your model to feel comfortable enough with you so that you can direct them anyway you want more naturally.

Highly recommend checking out Dean Collins if you're interested in lighting techniques.

Dylan Vitone is having a lecture on Monday. It will be from 12-1 in FA-4, 108A.

Vitone is an energetic and prolific documentary photographer who creates panoramic images out of multiple photographs. In particular, Vitone seeks out communities that are undergoing complex social changes. You can see his work online at: http://www.dylanvitone.com/

His photographic works are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the George Eastman House, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Portland Art Museum, and other museums. His works have been on special exhibit at, among many institutions, the Haas Gallery of Art, the Santa Fe Center for Photography, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Huntington Gallery, and the Photographic Resource Center. Vitone holds a BA in Photocommunications from St. Edward’s University and an MFA in Photography from Massachusetts College of Art.

Also don't forget to check out these exhibitions at LACMA that are going on right now.
